Batwing

This model of the Batwing from the 1989 movie was made box stock with no modifications. Representing the aerodynamically impossible yet very interestingly shaped flying vehicle from the most exciting and at the same time stupid and nonsensical part of the film, I originally started it back in 1990 and it sat unfinished in a box for 22 years before I decided I knew how I wanted to paint it. It's all black scheme requires some finessing to make it look interesting.

Many people use various shades of dark gray to impart a paneled look, but that looks too obvious. Instead I used varying degrees of gloss and matte finish on the all black surface to enhance a sense of scale. It was also fairly tricky to photograph in a realistic way.  The original VFX miniatures built for the film were in three scales, the largest had a six foot wingspan. That's the one I tried to match, as it was seen in closeup.

Next time I do this model I'll put some lights in it.
